In July 2021, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos made history by launching into space, marking a significant milestone for the burgeoning space tourism industry. With Virgin Galactic’s supersonic spaceplane and Blue Origin’s reusable rocket completing their first crewed flights, commercial space travel took its first major leap. While both of these companies focus on suborbital trips, other players like Axiom and Boeing are working on more ambitious orbital missions. However, in April 2022, Elon Musk took space tourism to new heights, with the launch of Axiom Mission 1, a mission that saw four private astronauts journey to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX rocket. At a staggering US$55 million per ticket, this mission represented the pinnacle of luxury space tourism. Axiom Space also plans to launch its own private space station, the first “space hotel”, by 2025, offering space tourists a new destination in orbit.

(Axiom Mission 1

  • Virgin Galactic:25
  • Blue Origin:
  • Axiom Space:5500
  • Space Perspective:12.5

According to the Space Tourism Guide, space tourism encompasses a variety of commercial activities related to space, including traveling to space as a tourist, attending rocket launches, stargazing, or visiting space-themed destinations. There are currently six major companies leading the charge in space tourism: Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing, Axiom Space, and Space Perspective. Below is a breakdown of the costs for a trip to space with these companies.

  • Virgin Galactic: US$250,000 for a 2-hour suborbital flight reaching an altitude of 80 km.
  • Blue Origin: Approximately US$300,000 for a 12-minute suborbital flight reaching an altitude of 100 km.
  • Axiom Space: US$55 million for a 10-day orbital mission to the International Space Station.
  • Space Perspective: US$125,000 for a 6-hour flight to the edge of space, 32 km above Earth.

In addition, Chinese startup Deep Blue Aerospace has already sold its first two tickets for a 2027 flight to space, priced at 1.5 million RMB (around US$211,000). Deep Blue Aerospace believes that reusable rockets will be key to driving down launch costs and enabling large-scale commercialization of space tourism. Other Chinese companies, including state-backed CAS Space, have also announced plans to enter the space tourism market by 2028. The future of space tourism looks bright, with Virgin Galactic reporting that around 650 people have already booked tickets for its suborbital flights.
